At the completion of their training program, Program Directors (PDs) must attest to whether or not each resident has achieved competency in Core Outcomes in the American Board of Family Medicine Residency Training Management System. ABFM Core Outcomes are observable behaviors that capture the broad scope of a Family Medicine practice.

Tips

  • PDs should collaborate with their Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) early to determine the parameters to be used to advise the PD on achievement of the outcomes by individual residents, throughout each year of training and particularly at the time of graduation.
    • Resources available for methods are readily available through the STFM CBME toolkit.
    • While attestation is only required at the completion of training, it is expected that the process will be incorporated throughout the residency's curriculum.
  • PDs should consider incorporating evaluation of Core Outcomes into each CCC review, with feedback on progression to the resident after each review.
  • Residents who are not making progression toward competency in an outcome should consider this when formulating their individualized learning plans with advisors.
  • PDs should update their summative evaluations of residents to include achievement of or progression toward competency in Core Outcomes, particularly in documents related to advancement to the next post-graduate year or graduation.

Step-By-Step Guide

1. Log into the ABFM Residency Training Management System.

2. Under the ABFM Certification Examination tab, click Residency Completion Verification. Each core outcome is denoted by a phrase and checkbox next to each resident's name.

3. Check the box for each outcome in which the resident has demonstrated competency. If the resident has not demonstrated competency in a core outcome, you may give a narrative explanation (up to 7000 characters).

a) Residents not achieving competency will not be eligible for ABFM Certification – even if they have completed the program and passed the certification exam.
