JOLT Faculty Applications Now Open

Deadline: Sunday, December 14, 2025 

AFMRD and the JOLT Cabinet members are thrilled to invite applications for six inaugural faculty roles in our newest leadership initiative: JOLT – Just-in-Time Opportunities for Leadership Training. With generous support from the ABFM Foundation, JOLT is a flexible, virtual leadership development initiative created by the AFMRD to meet the professional development needs of faculty in academic family medicine who are transitioning into leadership roles other than program directors of an accredited residency. 

  • Participate in curriculum design and refinement with support from JOLT Cabinet 

  • Deliver one curricular topic (live and asynchronous) twice annually 

  • Mentor fellows through structured virtual engagement 

  • Support assessment and feedback processes 

  • Attend in-person capstone events (as needed) 

  • Serve for three years

  • Faculty will serve a three-year term and receive an annual stipend of $1,000.

Applicants must: 

  • Be AFMRD members (or plan to join if selected) 

  • Be family medicine faculty (physicians or educators) with experience in leadership, mentoring and teaching 

  • Demonstrate content expertise in one or more JOLT curriculum topics (below) 

  • Be comfortable with virtual educational technologies 

  • Represent diverse backgrounds and lived experiences 

  • Be able to travel to the RLS in Dallas, TX in March 2026 if selected

Please submit the following materials: 

  1. Letter of Interest (max 2 pages) – Highlight strengths in teaching JOLT topics 

  1. Abbreviated CV (max 2 pages) – Focus on relevant leadership and teaching experience 

  1. Virtual Instruction Experience (max 1 page) – Describe mentoring/coaching in virtual settings 

  1. Two Teaching Portfolio Examples (one writing sample such as annual report, curriculum or similar, and one recent teaching presentation) 

  1. Letter of Recommendation from a colleague/supervisor** (max 2 pages) 

  1. Letter of Recommendation from a current/former mentee** (max 2 pages) 

  1. Completed application that asks applicants to Rank preferred Curricular Topics from 1 to 6 (See the topics below)

Faculty may be assigned to one of the following areas: 

1. Navigating Your System 

This module equips learners with strategies to understand and work effectively within complex organizational structures. Learn how to leverage committees, manage up, and apply leadership principles to influence systems and drive outcomes. 

2. Building Your Community 

Focused on professional relationship-building, this module explores networking strategies and the dual roles of mentoring and being mentored. It emphasizes the importance of cultivating supportive connections to foster leadership growth and resilience. 

3. Mastering Challenging Interactions 

This topic addresses difficult interpersonal dynamics, developing skills to handle difficult conversations and resolving conflicts constructively. It includes strategies for handling crucial conversations, managing challenging learners, peers, and supervisors, and explores leadership styles and implicit bias. 

4. Personal Professional Development 

Designed to support career advancement, this module guides participants in career visioning and leadership profiles, engaging in medical education scholarship, and developing skills in delegation, vitality, and change management. 

5. Introduction to the "Family of Family Medicine" and Organized Medicine 

This topic provides a clear overview of the key organizations within the family of family medicine and their roles in shaping the specialty. Learners will explore how these entities influence policy, education, and advocacy, and discover practical ways to engage meaningfully. The module also covers program requirements, the role of WebADS, and principles of competency-based medical education, equipping faculty to navigate regulatory frameworks with confidence. 

6. Fundamentals & Implications of Program Funding  

Participants learn the fundamentals of graduate medical education funding, including DME and IME, federal and state sources, private grants, and practice finance. This section addresses budgeting principles, funding sources, and strategies for aligning resources with program goals.

Applications will be reviewed by the JOLT Cabinet members. Interviews will be held in December 2025 and January 2026, and final selections will be made by early February 2026.
