Program Director Recognition Award

The Board of Directors of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) is pleased to offer the Program Director Recognition Award.  The Program Director Recognition Award is a self-initiated mechanism for recognizing the achievements of program directors in light of their unique roles, responsibilities and challenges. The program provides for:

  • An evaluation of Program Director’s accomplishments based upon criteria established external to their program.
  • A tangible product of recognition to demonstrate the achievements of Program Directors.
  • A mechanism to validate the accomplishments upon which the recognition is based.
  • A structure appropriate for future use by Program Directors to plan their personal and professional development objectives.

The AFMRD Board has identified the following parameters to categorize the accomplishments of Program Directors:

  • Tenure - continuity in the position of residency director, program accreditation status and active membership in AFMRD and AAFP.
  • Training - attendance at Workshops, i.e., PDW, RPS, STFM
  • Performance - presentations at regional and national meetings;scholarly publications; completion of fellowships (including NIPDD),academic degrees, leadership training and certification; service in state or national organizations; support for faculty development andsupport for resident membership in AAFP.
  • Advocacy - contact with state and federal legislators to support the priorities of Family Medicine.

The award program consists of three levels (bronze, silver and gold), based on the completion of more substantial accomplishments in each category. The Program Director must complete an application, listing his or her accomplishments in each of the above-mentioned categories.  You may view the criteria for the different levels by clicking here.

Applications for these awards require a signature from the individual to whom the program director reports. This serves to validate the accuracy of the stated accomplishments, and puts the residency director’s supervisor on notice that he or she deserves recognition.

All applications and supporting materials must be postmarked by March 27, 2010. Applicants meeting the criteria for the award will be recognized with a framed certificate at the annual Workshop for Directors of Family Medicine Residencies.

The application fee for the award is $95.00. Payment may be made with a credit card or check.  Please make checks payable to the Association of Family Medicine Residency DirectorsClick here to apply.
