The American Diabetes Association reports that there are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control have predicted that of the people that are born in 2000, one of every three will develop diabetes in their lifetime.  Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the U.S., and increases the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, extremity amputations, neurological disorders, and other chronic conditions.

The Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), in conjunction with Novo Nordisk, invites family medicine residents to attend a workshop focused on learning about the newest information available on the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
