Kevin E. Johnson, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Johnson is the founding program director at Northside Hospital - Gwinnett Family Medicine Residency Program in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

He completed his residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC and earned his medical degree from University of Oklahoma-Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, OK.

What are your greatest professional interests?

I am at heart a country physician, trapped in a metropolitan area, running a residency program. My personal clinical interests lie in end of the age spectrum, with palliative medicine, poly-pharmacy and de-prescribing.  But in true Family Medicine fashion, I also enjoy teaching procedures and practice management.

What are your personal hobbies and interests?

As I said, I am a country boy, so growing things in my garden, boating, fishing, and college football are high on my list of recreational activities. I also spend as much time as possible with my wife following the Pride of Mill Creek Marching Band around to competitions to watch my saxophonist daughter perform.

If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about graduate medical education, what would it be?

To stop the widget counting and focus on competency based education.  We need to level the playing field versus other specialties if we are to ever meet our country’s need for more family physicians by establishing new programs and expanding current programs.  We do not need to sacrifice quality for quantity, and the numbers alone do not assure competency.
