Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) applied to the collaborative with an initial goal of evaluating the feasibility of a clinic first model for scheduling and curriculum design. After the initial meeting in Kansas City we were inspired by some of the great ideas put forth by other programs in the interest of improving their resident’s clinical experience. While we have not yet fully adopted a clinic first model, we find ourselves better informed as we go forward.
We have made recent strides in better evaluating continuity, better ability to track outcome metrics and provide feedback to clinicians and staff. We have encountered several obstacles along the way including losing 15% of our clinic staff in budget cuts as well as challenges in data extraction and analysis from our EHR.
Our clinic has worked together implementing staff training on workflows with metrics algorithms, improved resident involvement in quality processes which included resident QI projects, and use of incentives such as data comparison between suites, take out party for winning suites and a pie in the face of the director if all measures are met.
We appreciate the collaborative discussion which provides a means of inspiration, ideas and possibly most importantly, a sense of collective struggle towards a common goal of excellence in the unique setting of a residency clinic. Thanks everyone!
