Strategic Plan for Residency Education in Family Practice
To effectively utilize family medicine residency programs to educate a variety of learners in the principles of family medicine.
Strategic Directions:
5.1 Prioritize resources foremost to produce competent board certified family physicians.
5.2 Encourage ethnic and cultural diversity by targeting minority high school/college pre-medicine students to consider careers in family medicine.
5.3 Encourage medical schools to select and train medical students who have the aptitude and desire to be family physicians.

ADFM, AAFP Chapters
Strategy:
- Place family physicians on medical school admissions committees.
5.4 Provide opportunities for longitudinal family medicine training experiences for all levels of medical students and residents.
5.5 Fill programs with residents best qualified to be family physicians.
5.6 Assist residencies to identify retraining pathways that lead to generalist careers utilizing competency-based retraining opportunities.

5.7 Assist residencies in developing flexible part-time residencies for non-board- certified family physicians.
