William Gillanders, MD
William Gillanders, MD, graduated from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine in 1972 and completed a family medicine residency at the University of Washington (UW) in 1975. After residency, he joined the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and was assigned to White Salmon, Washington. After completing three years in the NHSC, he stayed an additional 7 years as a full-service rural FP. He remained active in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and was Washington State President in the early 80's.
In 1985, Dr. Gillanders' career track changed with a move to Ohio to become residency director at St. Elizabeth Hospital, one of the NEOUCOM affiliates. He was active in the NEOUCOM research division, with particular interest in Health Services and Geriatric topics. Dr. Gillanders participated with Kurt Stange, MD, PhD and the Case Western team in the original Direct Observation of Primary Care (DOPC) studies and was co-author of the original DOPC paper. In 1994, he moved to Sacramento, California as founding director of the Sutter Health Family Medicnie Residency Program, a UC Davis affiliated program. In 2000, he returned to the Northwest as founding director of the Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine Residency Program, a community-based OHSU affiliate.
Dr. Gillanders is currently Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at OHSU and on the GMEC executive committee for Providence Health System, Oregon. He remains nationally active as one of the AAFP’s Residency Program Solutions (RPS) Consultants with particular expertise in financing family medicine residency programs. He is a frequent speaker at RPS and at the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) meetings, primarily around financial and health information technology topics. Dr. Gillanders has co-authored two papers with Perry Pugno, MD, MPH, CPE on residency financing, and his most recent research efforts relate to information technology and chronic disease management. He is a member of the National Institute for Program Director Development (NIPDD) project board and teaches residency finance topics at NIPDD I and health information technology sessions at NIPDD II.
