Edward T. Bope, MD
Edward T. Bope, MD, was born and raised in the state of Ohio. He received his BS in Zoology from the Ohio State University and his MD from the same institution in 1976. Dr. Bope chose Family Medicine and did a residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He became Board Certified in Family Medicine in 1979, and also holds a certificate of added qualifications from the American Board of Family Medicine in Adolescent Medicine. Following residency, he became the associate director of the Riverside Residency, and in 1985, became the Program Director. He was President of the American Board of Family Medicine in 1995 after serving on the board for five years. In other venues Dr. Bope has served as Chairman of the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Family Medicine, was president of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, and was Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee Chairs Council. He currently serves as a member of the ACGME Board of Directors. Dr. Bope has contributed many chapters to textbooks, is editor of the Saunders Review of Family Medicine, and is co-editor of two texts including the annual Conn’s Current Therapy.
Dr. Bope is member of King Avenue United Methodist Church and serves on several community groups. His special interests are teaching medical students, taking mission trips to Mexico and working in the Physician’s Free Clinic where he is the volunteer medical director. He was chosen in 2001 as the American Academy of Family Physicians Exemplary Teacher of the Year, and in 2002, was chosen as the first AAFP Residency Director of the Year (now the Nikitas Zervanos MD Residency Director of the Year). He was a founding member of the National Institute for Program Director Development and remains on the Academic Council and is a past chair of the council.
