Everyone is at risk for osteoporosis as we age. Certain factors will increase a person's risk. The following questions will help you and your doctor determine if you are at high risk for developing osteoporosis or need further evaluation.
Are you 65 or older?
Do you have a history of broken bones during adulthood?
Are you female and past menopause?
Do you weigh less than 127 lbs.?
Are you Caucasian or Asian?
Have you been taking cortisone-like drugs for asthma, arthritis or other conditions for 3 months or more?
Do you have a family history of broken bones in the spine or hip ?
Do you smoke cigarettes?
Is your diet low in sources of calcium, such as dairy products (and you are not taking calcium supplements)?
Do you consume, on average, more than two alcoholic beverages per day?
Do you exercise less than 30 minutes, 3 times a week?
